Addiction Psychiatry & Addiction Medicine Fellowships

The Department of Psychiatry offers three fellowship programs in Addictions. Psychiatry is the only specialty that has ACGME-approved fellowships available in addiction.

  • The first is a two-year Addiction Medicine research fellowship which is open to non-psychiatry physicians, such as Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, OB/Gyn, Neurology, etc. This is funded by the VA and involves training at one of three national VA Centers of Clinical Excellence in Addiction, as well as UC sites.
  • The second is a one-year Addiction Psychiatry clinical fellowship that is ACGME approved. This is funded by UC, and involves training at the above VA and UC sites.
  • There is also a third option available on a case-by-case basis and depending on local available funding. This is a one-year Addiction Medicine clinical fellowship, which is available to non-psychiatry physicans.  It is sponsored locally, and is flexible in terms of rotation sites with the majority at the above sites.

Fellows are exposed to a rich assortment of clinical environments that include rotations in a nationally-recognized Clinical Program of Excellence in Substance Use Disorders. Research opportunities exist in two NIH-funded addiction research centers, studying illicit drug abuse, and alcohol and tobacco addiction. UC Department of Psychiatry is ranked 14th nationally for NIH funding in 2008; one of the fastest rising departments in the U.S., with one of the very largest psychiatric pharmaceutical research programs. Fellowship Faculty is comprised of addiction specialists from multiple disciplines, dedicated to quality patient care, teaching, and scholarly activity. Experiential, team-based clinical learning is interwoven with approximately 50 addiction-specific didactics, 20 review audio-lectures, live oral examination, hands-on teaching, and unique multidisciplinary feedback sessions - focused to advance competency-based learning.

Highly competitive salary and benefits are available. The tri-state Cincinnati area offers uniquely diverse entertainment and shopping, affordable housing, and one of the finest selections of public schools in the nation. Robust employment opportunities exist for post-fellowship positions within the College of Medicine, VA, and growing tri-state addiction-specialty marketplace.
